Microneedling
Science
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a cosmetic procedure that involves the use of small needles to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin. It primarily targets the dermis, which is the second layer of the skin located beneath the epidermis. The dermis contains essential structures such as collagen, elastin fibers, blood vessels, and hair follicles.

During a microneedling session, a specialised device equipped with fine needles is gently passed over the skin, creating tiny punctures or channels. These micro-injuries prompt the skin to produce new collagen and elastin fibers, which can improve skin texture, reduce the appearance of scars, wrinkles, and stretch marks, and enhance overall skin firmness and elasticity.
Microneedling is used to address various skin concerns, including:
-
Fine lines and wrinkles
-
Acne scars
-
Uneven skin texture
-
Large pores
-
Stretch marks
-
Sun damage
-
Skin discoloration or hyperpigmentation
Advantages
Microneedling offers several advantages compared to other skin rejuvenation treatments:
-
Stimulates Collagen Production: Microneedling stimulates natural healing, increasing collagen for firmer, youthful skin long-term, unlike temporary fixes from some skincare.
-
Versatility: treats various skin issues like wrinkles, scars, uneven texture, and pigmentation, making it popular for overall rejuvenation.
-
Safety Profile: Professionally done, microneedling is safe for diverse skin types, with lower risks of pigment changes compared to lasers, especially for darker skin tones.
-
Minimal Downtime: requires minimal downtime, with any redness and swelling typically subsiding within days, enabling a swift return to regular activities compared to more invasive treatments like laser or peels.
-
Customisable Treatment: Microneedling is customisable, adjusting needle depth, treatment frequency, and the use of serums to target specific skin concerns and optimize results for each person
-
Cost-Effectiveness: Microneedling is often more cost-effective than laser or surgical procedures, making it a more accessible option for skin rejuvenation. Though multiple sessions may be needed, the overall cost is typically lower.
